I met Richard a few years ago, in Yellowknife, through a mutual friend after having finished his book of short stories, Angel Wing Splash Pattern. I was in disbelief that this guy full of positive light and energy had written stories that can plunge into such dark places. He thought I was French Canadian, so were both wrong. Today, his work continues to be gain momentum and recognition. He was recently bestowed the honour of becoming “Northerner of the Year” for Up Here magazine. The picture on the cover of the magazine, by Pat Kane, is perfect; Richard giving the world a big smooch.
The Lesser Blessed is Richard's view into the teenage world of Fort Smith in the1990s. The story has had such success and longevity because of a strong universal element that transcends time and place. The film adaptation has been fit to the mood of current teenage angst, through metal and hip hop. The music may be different from the 90s, but emotions remain the same. From the film's website, I thought I would be walking onto the set of a heavy metal video. The visuals have played out to be more subtle, taking a more naturalistic approach to examining the teenage world.

I wondered if it would be hard for Richard to watch his words and characters come to life, but he let go a long time ago, placing his trust in Anita and Christina. For Richard, the ultimate test is how his brothers will react to the Northern content.
Richard wants The Lesser Blessed to be for the NWT what Antarnajuat was to Nunavut. As I watch this production unfold, I believe it is possible. This movie has the right elements to be an independent critical success; good casting translated into incredible performances, and challenging artistic choices. Hopefully, the film will open up a realm of possibilities to the NWT.
